Congratulations! You’ve decided to take a vacation. Maybe it’s a family vacation or one you’re taking solo or with friends. It doesn’t matter. You are going to make the most of your time away from home. However, something worries you. You have this nagging fear of spending so much money on your vacation that you come back home and can’t afford your rent or a decent latte. No worries. There are some simple things you can do to save money before and during your vacation so you have money to live after returning home.

Research Your Vacation Spot

It doesn’t hurt to research your vacation spot before going. You may think this is a no-brainer, but a lot of people don’t do extensive research on the area where they want to vacation. Extensive research involves looking at the layout of the city, the best places to stay and the average cost of tourism spots.

For example, Las Vegas has a lot of places to stay. The strip is often the most expensive. With a little research, you can often stay off-strip and have a good time. You may find that you don’t want to visit your initial vacation spot. In this case, look at a couple of cities before making your decision.

Book Your Vacation Early

You may want to go on vacation today, but it’s best to take time and reserve your home and flights several months in advance. You can save a lot of money by booking in advance instead of saving it until the last minute. Also, you can save money by booking directly with your hotel. In fact, many hotels offer special discounts on rooms and packages if you book directly with them.

Use Flexibility When Booking Transportation

Be flexible when booking your flight. You’re planning a vacation, not a business trip. So you can be flexible in the number of stops during your trip, whether you have a long layover or your seat selection. All these things can lower how much you pay for your flight. You also want to check alternative dates for leaving and arriving at your vacation destination. Some flights are cheaper during the middle of the week than on the weekend.

Consider transportation alternatives such as renting a car, going by bus or by train. These alternatives can be cheaper than traveling by plane. It may take a little more time but it will be worth it to save money.

Use Wifi Hotspots When Vacationing Abroad

You’re ready for a great vacation in another country. Unfortunately, your cell phone service plan is costly in another country. So while you’re vacationing abroad, turn off your cell data when possible. Some phone carriers charge extra fees for each text spent and received. In addition, many phone carriers charge international calling and text charges. This means that you’re going to spend a lot of money just telling everyone how great you’re doing on vacation.

Pick a Hotel with a Kitchen or Microwave

Eating at restaurants while on vacation can cost you a lot of money. Instead, choose a hotel with a kitchen, kitchenette or at least a microwave. This way you can save money by preparing your own meals. It’s often cheaper to buy food at the grocery store than at a restaurant.

Create a Budget for Expenses

Set a budget for everything you do on vacation. For example, if you plan to eat at a restaurant once or twice during your vacation, set the money aside. This way you don’t overspend. You also want to create a travel budget. Taking a taxi can get expensive during your vacation because you’re planning to go to a lot of places.

Decide how you’re going to travel from your hotel to certain destinations. Are you using a ridesharing app or renting a car? The best way to travel while on vacation is by public transportation. You can often get bus or train tickets mailed to you. Also, you can buy them while you’re on vacation.

Don’t worry if you have multiple budgets for various things like shopping and transportation. These budgets will go a long way in saving you money during your trip.

Pack Lightly While You’re Traveling to and from Your Vacation Destination

You may want to take two or three bags of clothes with you on vacation. Resist the urge. Instead, pack light. Whether you are flying, taking the train or sitting on the bus, most transportation companies charge extra for more than the allotted bags. For example, if you are taking the bus, you may be limited to two bags. This means you’re paying the bus company just to take a third or fourth bag.

Save money by packing lightly. Take only the amount of clothes you know you’ll wear. While traveling dress in layers. The extra clothing will keep you warm during your travel. However, the clothes will also provide additional clothing options while on vacation. This means you stay warm, take extra clothes with you and save money.

Look for Free Things to do While on Vacation

While researching your next vacation spot, research free activities. Many cities have a lot of fun activities to do that are free such as a self-guided walking tour. While you’re researching, look online for community calendars to see what’s happening the week you’re in town.

Get Ready for Your Exiting, Money Saving Vacation

You deserve a vacation. You don’t have to go broke while on vacation. You can start your vacation off right by doing some research on your destination spot, free activities and transportation. Book early and travel light. Don’t spend too much money. You want to have enough money for your daily expenses when you return home.
