With the environment deteriorating at an alarming rate, it’s always a good idea to start doing things that can help cut down on damages. Most of these things might seem like they are small and shouldn’t really matter, but every little bit helps. While it might take some getting used to, doing these 10 things will not only help the environment, but they will also make you feel proud about your decisions!
Use Less Water
The first thing you can do to help the environment is use less water. It might seem like water will always be available, but it is a limited resource. In fact, some areas don’t have clean water and others are experiencing droughts that leave them with no water. Some things you can do to help you conserve your water are: don’t leave the water going when brushing your teeth, take quicker showers and don’t do laundry more than necessary. All of these things can help you cut down quite a bit and save a good amount of water.
You can also drive less. While the newer cars are much better than older ones, they still cause wear and tear that damages the environment. Besides the emissions they give off, you also have to think about the harmful chemicals that go into a car to keep it running, like oil or coolant. You can help minimize these impacts by doing things like carpooling, walking or even riding your bike!
Skip Plastic Bags
When you look at the oceans and litter that is laying around, you’ll probably notice that plastic bags are a big part of it. Not only does plastic not break down very well, but it can cause serious complications for both humans and animals. A great way to combat this is by using reusable bags. If you invest in a few of these bags, you can take them with you to places like the grocery store and you won’t have to worry about packing your groceries in plastic!
Waste Less Food
While most food is biodegradable, you want to minimize the amount of waste you have. Not only does actually growing the food have an impact on the environment, but all the things that are done to get the food to you do as well. There are a few ways to help ensure you won’t waste food. The first is by only buying what you need and what you know will get eaten. You could also start your own compost, then use the contents to fertilize your own garden!
Since there are many things that can’t be broken down naturally, like cans and plastic bottles, you want to make sure you recycle instead of just throwing them into the trash. If you throw them in the trash, they’re going to need to be taken somewhere and that results in thousands of piles of stuff that will never break down. If you take these items to be recycled, you won’t have to worry about this. The great thing is that many of these items can be made into other items, so they’re actually being used again.
Even if the items you have can break down naturally, it’s always a good idea to reuse as much as you can. The great thing is that the majority of the products on the market today are made in a way that you can use them for multiple things. For example, a few of the things you can use again are: plastic food containers, wrapping paper and milk cartons. Even if you don’t use them in your home, you can figure something out that will let you use them outside!
Reuse Your Water Bottle
Instead of buying cases of water bottles, you could opt to use a reusable bottle. Not only will you have less worries of the bottle being damaged, but you also won’t be throwing away a bunch of plastic. This is especially true for those that drink multiple bottles of water a day. All you have to do is refill your bottle and use it as many times as you want or need to!
Another thing you could do is either buy local or choose to grow your own food. It might not seem like a big deal, but it really is when you think about everything that goes into the process. When you buy from large stores, there are so many costs and steps that happen for you to get your food. Not only do you have to think about how the food is harvested, but you also have to think about all the gas that’s needed to actually get the food to the store. It really adds up.
Cut Down on Animal Products
If possible, you should try to cut down on animal products. This includes things like meat, eggs and cheese. The main reason why this can help the environment is because a lot more goes into raising animals for consumption than it does growing plants. For example, not only do you have to think about the cost of feeding the animal, but you also have to think about the effects of the animal’s waste and how much goes into actually butchering and processing the animal for food.
Use Appliances Less
The final thing you can do to help the environment is to use your appliances less. Not only can you get newer appliances that use less energy, but you can also use appliances you have that don’t use as much energy. For instance, using a microwave oven will use less energy than using a normal oven or using a crock pot will use less energy than the stove top!
As you can see, even little things can have a pretty big impact. While you won’t be able to change the world by yourself, every step you take to help preserve the environment makes the cause one step closer! Remember, we only have 1 Earth, so we need to take care of it!
